Our Mission

Our mission is to provide students with a unique undergraduate experience at Northwestern.  We aim to merge learning experiences with social and community interactions in and around the Chicago area.  Our goal is to expose residents to the many diverse cultural offerings this thriving metropolis has to offer.  CCS strives to complete these goals through community service projects, trips to ethnic neighborhoods, and faculty-led firesides.  More than that, CCS also strives to make the residential hall a true home, where its residents can form a cohesive family and a community of their own.

Our History

The Residential College of Cultural and Community Studies was one of Northwestern's first residential colleges.  Founded in the fall of 1972, CCS was originally called the Urban Studies College.  The college's main purpose was to provide a home to students interested in the interaction of diverse cultures and urban communities in the United States and abroad.  CCS emphasizes interaction with the local community through a variety of outings and through community service, while maintaining interest in the culture that defines the world outside this community.  Thus, members organize and participate in events that offer contact with various cultures and ethnic groups in the Chicago area.

"I love CCS because it is a nice small community on a large campus.  Northwestern was one of the largest schools I looked at and having come from a tiny high school, I was afraid I would be lost in the crowds.  CCS provided me with a home-like atmosphere where I could know everybody's name and from which I could explore Chicago and opportunities at Northwestern.  Having upper classmen around who are still committed to CCS as well as faculty connections was an excellent resource for me socially and academically.  Also, CCSers are always involved in so many different things on campus so it is always fun to go to a show that a CCSer is in or explore a diversity of different NU organizations that CCSers are members of.  My best friends and roommates all come from CCS so even though I no longer live in the dorm, I am still completely ingrained in CCS." - Grace Graham, WCAS '10
