Welcome, New Freshmen!
This page has everything you ever wanted to know (and more!) about
your upcoming year at CCS!
What should I bring to school with
me? (Of course most of this is
up to your discretion, but here are some suggestions.)
Clothing and Such
- shirts,
pants, socks, underwear, pajamas, etc.
- sweatshirts,
coats, gloves, hats, scarfs, long underwear, etc.
- rain and snow boots, waterproof pants, etc.
For Your Room - sheets, blankets,
pillow, comforter, etc.
- extension cord, power strip
- a fan
- toiletries
- a towel
- laundry basket, detergent, etc.
- school supplies
- decorations for your room
- alarm clock
- an umbrella
- hangers
- dishes and silverware (you may want
to cook something in the CCS kitchen)
- storage units
Miscellaneous Useful Items- camera
- headphones
- games
- external hard drive
- a small duffel bag or backpack (for Thanksgiving break and camping/short
weekend trips)
- formal wear (there are formal events a few times per year)
Try to be reasonable about how much you bring--remember that you'll
be accumulating new things over the course of the entire year and you have very limited space in a dorm room!
What Events Do I Have to Look Forward to for Fall
Quarter?

During Wildcat Welcome: - A cultural trip with
everyone from CCS--We'll take the El into Chicago and explore an ethnic neighborhood!
- Fellow's Dinner--Meet some of the fellows of CCS and learn about all of the cool stuff they do!
- Rock the Beach--An RCB/RHA event for all the new freshmen with lots of food, music, games,
and fun!
- New Student Trip--A trip for all the freshman to a cool place! (In
previous years it's been to the Field Museum and Six Flags.)
- One Book, One Northwestern
Events--There are tons of events about the book you were sent over the summer to read!
During September/October: - RCB Yacht Formal--Get dressed up and
attend a formal on a huge yacht which leaves from Navy Pier. Dance with your friends, enjoy food (including a chocolate
fountain), and meet people from other residential colleges!
- A community service tour
with CCS--See many of the different community service opportunities available in the area and some of our favorite
places to volunteer.
Later During Fall Quarter: - CCS Fall Camping Trip--Trips are a lot of fun, including activities like apple picking and games!
- Thanksgiving Dinner--A celebration for the people that stay in CCS over break!
During the Entire Quarter: - IM Sports--Every
quarter CCSers sign up to play two different IM sports, competing against other residential colleges!
- Weekly Fellow's Lunch--Throughout the quarter, our faculty fellows come to our dining room to have lunch
with us. This is a fantastic opportunity to get to know professors and faculty members in your area of interest or in some
area that you've never even thought of before!
- Firesides--About once a
month a professor (or even a student) will give a presentation about a topic of interest. Discussion is encouraged!
- Community Service--Volunteering on a regular basis at a place in Chicago or
Evanston is important to many members of CCS. We volunteer at places like Family Focus, Jumpstart Reads, and Campus
Kitchens.
- Cross-RC Events--Go to events with students from other residential
colleges, such as an El Tour of Chicago with a history professor or a field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago!
CCS is a place where your voice can be heard. Any resident can suggest or even plan a CCS event! If there's
something you've always wanted to do in Chicago, we can probably do it!
